- Senators disagreed with President Rodrigo Duterte when he said Secretary Francisco Duque III is “the hero” of the government’s excellent COVID-19 response
- Senators Tito Sotto, Sherwin Gatchalian pointed at frontliners and the entire COVID-19 team as the real heroes
- Senator Kiko Pangilinan didn’t mince his words and said only the administration believes they are doing a good job amid the pandemic
Several senators reacted to the earlier statement of President Rodrigo Duterte calling Health Secretary Francisco Duque III as “the hero” of the government’s good COVID-19 response.
Earlier, the President remarked that the Philippines is doing well in terms of COVID-19 response in comparison with other countries. He credited the success to Duque whom he described as “the hero.”
“Compared with other countries, which is not really the time to do comparisons, but we are doing good in the fight against COVID and Secretary Duque is the hero here,” Duterte said.
However, several senators contradicted the claim of Duterte and pointed at frontliners as the real heroes of the pandemic.
“That’s his opinion, to me, the frontliners are the heroes!” Senator Vicente Sotto III in a text message.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian agreed with the sentiments of Sotto; saying the government’s COVID-19 response was a team effort.
“Just to be fair, there were several heroes who effectively contributed to the government’s response to COVID – these are Sec. [Carlito] Galvez, Sec. [Vince] Dizon and all the medical frontliners. This is a team effort. No one man can arrest a pandemic of this magnitude,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senator Francis Pangilinan, disagreed with Duterte’s statement altogether; saying that it is only the administration who believes the government’s response has been “excellent” and that Duque was the “hero.”
“Yung pagiging ‘excellent’ at pagiging ‘hero ni Duque dahil sa good COVID response,’ palagay ko sila sila na lang ang naniniwala dun,” Pangilinan remarked.
