- Artist Vien Valencia made 5 x 4 artwork made of actual butterflies, oil, and house paint on canvas
- Vien explained that the artwork symbolizes setting something free
Derek Ramsay gifted his fiancee Ellen Adarna with a special custom-made engagement gift.
It seems like a diamond ring isn’t enough for Derek to prove his love for Ellen that he had to order another engagement gift for the love of his life. Shortly after his surprise proposal to Ellen, Derek also gifted her with a unique gift to celebrate the occasion.
Derek commissioned a local artist to create a mixed media artwork for Ellen. According to artist Vien Valencia, Derek wanted a “meaningful” gift for his beloved.
On Instagram, Vien shared a photo of the one-of-a-kind 5 x 4 feet artwork which she called “Exodus.” It is made of actual butterflies, oil, and house paint on canvas. She added that it symbolizes freedom.
Vien stated, “It’s a group of various species of actual butterflies against a black surface. Exodus literally means ‘the road out.’ I wanted to come up with something about setting free.”
The artists went on to share the story behind the artwork. Vien shared how the short lives of butterflies made her think about learning to appreciate everything around us.
“Also, they are a battle with the idea of
death. An average butterfly species has a life expectancy of about two days, and lives ten days at the most. No adult butterfly can live more than a year. Once you realize you’re not gonna be around forever, I think that’s what makes life so magical. One day you’ll eat your last meal, smell your last flower, hug your dog for the very last time, you might not know it’s the last time right? Treasure the few years you’ve got because that’s all there is,” she explained.
