Mon Tulfo, President Rodrigo Duterte’s special envoy to China, will be probed by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) after he admitted that he used a Sinopharm vaccine which was unregistered.
FDA Director General Eric Domingo revealed that Tulfo will be investigated for using unregistered China-made vaccine. He said that Tulfo’s case will be referred to the agency’s regulatory enforcement unit for investigation. Domingo stated that Tulfo is not setting a good example for receiving unregistered vaccines without following the correct process.
“Hindi maganda na nalalaman natin na may mga ganitong nagpapabakuna na hindi dumadaan sa tamang proseso,” the FDA chief said in a media briefing.
Tulfo admitted on his newspaper column that he received the Sinopharm vaccine along with other government officials on October 2020. He even offered to supply the vaccine for the President after he showed interest in the brand.
Health Department spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire also warned the public against using and supplying vaccines that have not received emergency use authorization (EUA) from the FDA.
“Ito ay makakasama sa imbestigasyon. All of these things, kapag nakitang hindi ayon sa batas, will be considered ill
egal. Those people using vaccines without EUA and also suppliers supplying vaccines without EUA, ito ay ili gal. Maaari kayong ma-s anc tion,” she said in a separate briefing.
Earlier, the FDA also launched an investigation on the inoculation of Presidential Security Group (PSG) members. But until now, Domingo said PSG has yet to respond to their queries.
“Yun pong sa PSG, hanggang sa ngayon po wala pa pong kasagutan ang aming tanong pati ang DOH [Department of Health], sumulat sa kanila pero as of now, wala pa po kaming nakukuhang impormasyon,” Domingo said.
