- Rami Malek has reacted to speculations that he will portray Manny Pacquiao in an upcoming biopic
- Earlier, Pacquiao admitted there have been plans to cast Malek and Leonardo DiCaprio as the boxing champ and as Freddie Coach, respectively
- Malek denied he had been offered the project and said it’s best that a Filipino actor will portray the boxing champ
Rami Malek has clarified rumors that he will play as Manny Pacquiao in his planned biopic.
According to earlier reports, the Oscar winner had been tapped to portray the life of the boxing champ in an upcoming film. It was even added that Leonardo DiCaprio was slated to play the role of Pacquiao’s longtime coach, Freddie Roach.
Even Pacquiao confirmed the speculation in an earlier TV interview. He, however, clarified that no final details have been made. “There is a proposal but hindi pa kami seriously na nag-usap ng finality about that topic,” he said.
“Iba-iba, tatlong movie ‘yun pero nandyan ‘yung ”reedom Fighters,’ at itong movie na ito ilalagay sa Netflix,” Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao also admitted talks about the film has been halted due to the pandemic.
Malek has been asked about the rumors and denied having any knowledge of the project.
“I can absolutely deny that. That’s fascinating. No, I will definitely not be playing Manny Pacquiao,” the 39-year-old actor clarified.
Malek also admitted his belief that it is best that a Filipino actor portray Pacquiao on screen rather than a foreigner.
“I think that would be the right choice,” he said in the interview.
“If we’ve learned anything, by certain stretches, an actor can do it. But for someone of Filipino origin, it would be nice to see that person being played by somebody from that country,” Malek added.
