- Muslim netizens called out the show for insensitivity
The drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) has issued an apology after a scene showed the Muslim prayer mat as a doormat.
On social media, netizens were enraged and disappointed over a scene where actor JC Alcantara was seen using a sojada/sajadan or a Muslim prayer mat as a doormat.
A screenshot of the scene was posted on Facebook page UGH as the caption expressed disappointment.
Among the comments were from netizens who called out the show for its insensitivity and ignorance on religious practices. A netizen wrote, “I am so disappointed at this moment! We muslim used sudjada when we are praying this is something na important samin. It’s really sad na makikita mo sa isang series ng MMK that they used it as a decor lang, ang malala door mat pa. This is so insensitive.”
Due to the uproar, MMK issued an official apology on its Facebook page. They admitted that it was an “honest mistake” and promised to do better next time.
The apology goes, “MMK expresses deep regrets for a scene in last Saturday’s episode that may have offended its Muslim viewers.”
“It was an honest mistake and we offer no excuse for this lapse in production. We thank our viewers for the feedback and promise to do better.”
