Rey Valera couldn’t help but be emotional while judging It’s Showtime’s “Tawag ng Tanghalan.”
During the show, a quarterfinalist Wincel Mae Portugal-Maglanque sang the classic, “Malayo pa ang Umaga.” The song was written by Valera himself years ago.
Maglanque, an overseas Filipino worker who lost her job as a singer in Macau due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shared how she holds on to her faith amid the difficulties.
She said, “Noon naranasan natin itong pandemya lalo na nung buma
Everything happens for a reason.”
When it was Valera’s time to give comments on the performance, Valera was close to
tears when he reflected on how the song resonates to the challenges our country is currently facing.
“Maiiyak na ako kanina. Naawa ako sa Pilipinas. Parang naramdaman ko ‘yung paghihirap natin lalo,” he said.
The veteran singer said he pities the Philippines and mentioned the closure of ABS-CBN.
In my own way, gusto kong suportahan sa abot ng aking makakaya,” he said.
Vice Ganda went on to share some positivity despite the challenges. He said, “We will pray. We will work very hard, hand-in-hand together. Tayo lahat magtutulungan, walang maiiwan at please, walang maglalamangan.”
