Teacher “Robert” who is currently in the San Juan City Jail led an initiative to make his Sunday productive by helping school children with their studies.

Through San Juan City Jail’s “Karunungan sa Kulungan Project”, Robert regained his sense of purpose and at the same time helps children.

The former teacher – who has 20 years of experience in teaching – conducts tutorial sessions to the children of his fellow inmates via ZOOM every Sunday. They reach out to children aged 4 to 7 years old and helps them with their assignments and modules. Currently, they already have four students on their online tutorials.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Hergielyn M. Gaca of DepEd San Juan, Teacher Robert’s online tutorials even follow the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) under the curriculum of the Department of Education (DepEd).

With the assistance of San Juan City Jail Warden Jose Marie Sabeniano, the initiative was made more special as they also distributed school supplies and food to the children’s homes.

“Iyong sense of purpose niya, nakita niya sa loob ng kulungan. na kahit nakakulong, magagawa pa rin nating makabuluhan ang buhay habang may natutulungan,” Sabeniano said the initiative has made a positive impact to inmates and the students as well.
