- Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said it should be up to Vice President Leni Robredo to make amends with President Rodrigo Duterte
- Roque noted how the President has given Robredo two chances when she was given cabinet positions
- The Vice President earlier earned the ire of Pres. Duterte for allegedly competing with the government’s relief efforts
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that if ties between President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo would be mended, the latter should make the initiative.
Roque said it is up to Robredo to take an action so that she and the President could work together, especially as the country is facing challenging times.
“It’s her call. Dalawang beses siyang in-appoint ni Presidente so I don’t know what initiatives she has taken naman. Maybe she should start the initiative,” Roque said.
Roque was referring to Robredo’s appointment as chair of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council in 2016. She resigned in five months after she was asked to stop attending Cabinet meetings. In 2019, Robredo was again appointed as co-chair of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD) but was later fired by Duterte due to her alleged “missteps”.
Robredo had earlier earned the ire of the President for allegedly competing with the government’s relief efforts. The Vice President replied and asked Duterte to set aside their political differences and work together.
“Gusto kong ipakita na kahit marami kaming political differences, puwede pa rin kaming magtrabaho together,” Robredo said in a radio show.
Roque also earlier answered “maybe not” to the possibility of the President and the Vice working harmoniously together. He, however, assured that once the President has aired sentiments, there will be better relations compared to if he keeps this to himself.
He said, “Siguro hindi na po. Despite the 2 opportunities, talagang VP Leni listened to her advisers and decided to become opposition, if not obstructionist.”
