- Catriona Gray was a judge at the recent Miss Universe Colombia 2020
- Many pageant fans noticed how she was introduced as “Australian by birth but represented the Philippines”
- Miss Universe Colombia Organization President Natalie Ackerman apologized and said there was no intended malice
Miss Universe Colombia Organization apologized to Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray for the controversial introduction she received during the pageant.
Catriona was in Colombia as one of the official judges of Miss Universe Colombia 2020. And while her experience at the pageant was memorable, her introduction became controversial. The host of the pageant introduced Catriona as “Australian by birth but represented the Philippines.”
Shortly after the pageant, Catriona posted a photo of herself on Instagram with the word “Filipina” on it.
The incident didn’t sit well with many Filipino pageant fans who expressed their dismay to the Miss Universe Colombia Organization. It also didn’t help that Catriona’ last name was misspelled on screen and was posted as “Catriona Garay.”
Finally breaking their silence, the president and national director of the Miss Universe Colombia Organization Natalie Ackerman issued an apology.
The statement said, “We also would like to express our apologies for the mistake of her last name due to some language barrier and the announcement that she was born in Australia – the translated language that was sent for introduction is ‘Born in Australia, from the Philippines who is Miss Universe 2018’ it is honestly part of the cultural differences as here in Colombia, we regard the value of unity and cross-cultural importance.”
“We assure that there is no malice intended as we invited Catriona Gray in the first place because we believe in Filipinos and having a personal Dubai-based friend, who is like a brother to me, I have always admired the Filipino culture and the kindness of the people from the Philippines. I hope that Catriona Gray will not take this matter against us and can forgive us and our management,” it added.
