Ang was given the Lifetime Contributor Award for the Private Sector at the Asia CEO Awards 2020. Ang’s leadership was recognized for making SMC the Philippines’ top diversified conglomerate and also one of the region’s largest.

The SMC expanded from beer-making and food manufacturing to infrastructure, oil refining, real estate, and power and energy. Currently, it is now generating about 5.9% of the country’s gross domestic product and employing more than 60,000 employees.

Ang had also recently announced the completion of the new Skyway Structure that connects the Southern and Northern Luzon Expressways ahead of schedule. It will cut travel time from SLEX to NLEX from three hours to 20 minutes.

The SMC reached over P13.187 billion in its total COVID-19 response. The assistance ranged from food donation drives, disinfectant donations using its liquor plants, donations of medical equipment and supplies, test kits and many others.

Ang accepted the award and shared how important it is to extend help amid the ongoing health crisis.

He said, “This crisis is unprecedented. So our response should also be unprecedented. Because what other bigger purpose is there than to help save lives? What other goal is more worthwhile than helping our country and… making it better? What kind of Filipinos would we be if we do not show malasakit towards each other in this time of great need?”

“So for us (in San Miguel), now is not the time to hold back. In fact, now is the time to go all out. Our country’s future depends on it,” he said.
