Caridad Sanchez’s daughter Cathy Babao revealed in a heartbreaking post that the veteran actress is now suffering from dementia.
Cathy said that Caridad, who turned 87 last August was diagnosed last 2015. She shared how the movie icon has a pattern of forgetting and repeating herself. “She remains physically strong. There are good and bad days pero paulit-ulit siya,” she told ABS-CBN.
She described her situation of caring for her mother as the “long goodbye.” “Overtime, you slowly lose the person. You just prepare for it,” Cathy said.
In an emotional post on Instagram, Cathy went on to share how she feels grateful that despite her mother’s situation, she still has the chance to care for her. She said the thought of being given time with her mother comforted her.
Cathy wrote, “Now, perhaps, our Father is giving me this chance at a long goodbye with my mom. To say all the things I need to say, to care for her, and to love her. That thought somehow comforted me. Because throughout this long goodbye, though the time may come when she will no longer remember me, I hope she will continue to feel the care and the love. After all, the h
eart always knows, and never forgets.”
She said people like Caridad who are suffering from dementia should not be kept hidden as their experiences may help families going through the same. She urged for early detection, awareness and acceptance.
“I believe my mom will be happy too knowing she was somehow able to help,” Cathy said.
