Senior citizens may now get 20 percent discount on their prescribed vitamins and supplements.
Amid the challenging times of COVID-19 pandemic, some good news await the senior citizens of our country.
The Department of Health (DOH) announced that vitamins and mineral supplements are now included in senior citizens’ 20 percent discount. They said the measure is an amendment to the previous guidelines that did not include vitamins among “medicines” qualified for discount and value-added tax exemption.
Health Spokesperson Ma. Rosario Vergeire informed the senior citizens in a virtual meeting about the good news; saying, “Pwede na po kayo bumili ng vitamins at mineral supplements na may 20 percent discount basta po may kasamang reseta.”
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III confirmed the amendment; stating, “This amendment is, hence, being issued to clarify that the purchase of vitamins and minerals supplements of senior citizens is likewise subject to the 20% Discount and VAT exemption subject to conditions prescribed under RA No. 9994 and its IRR.”
Meanwhile, many senior citizen advocates lauded the measure especially in a time of a health crisis that puts the elderly at risk for COVID-19.
Senior Citizens Rights advocate Romulo Macalintal appreciated the measure and congratulated the elderly population. He wrote on Facebook, “I’m happy to report to my fellow senior citizens that our appeal to the Department of Health to grant us 20% discount and VAT exemption for the purchase of vitamins and mineral supplements has been approved by the DOH…Congratulations seniors!”
The new discount will be available 30 days after publication of the administrative order.
