President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered that the government’s cash aid should be given to wives instead of husbands.
The President has ordered officials in charge of distributing the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) cash aid to hand the money directly to the wives.
Duterte said, “This is a direct order to everybody: ‘pag mag-distribute kayo ng pera, ibigay ninyo sa babae, to the wife.”
The President explained that the decision stemmed from his knowledge of men who do nothing at home and don’t give the cash assistance to their families but spend it on gambling.
“Huwag ninyong ibigay diyan sa mga lalaki ‘yung mga wala na ngang ginagawa, wala nang trabaho, walang ibinibigay sa pamilya at mayroon pang dadating na pera, isinusugal naman ninyo. Kung ako ang mayor, maabutan mo drinking and gambling sa tulong ng tao,” he said.
To prove he is serious with the decision, Duterte said he expects Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año to implement a mechanism to make sure that the SAP aid will go directly to the wives.
Duterte lamented how many husbands “don’t really care about the family.” He added that if the husbands insist on getting the cash aid, the government may opt to give him food supplies worth the same amount as the cash aid.
The President had earlier warned that no more aid will be given to those found engaging in vices, drinking and gambling.
