According to GMA News, the DENR official said collectors should be given PPEs like they are inside an operating room since they are exposed to waste materials which are undeniably contaminated.

He said focus at present is given to patient management, treatment and isolation, and distribution of goods to affected households.

While acknowledging that the efforts mentioned are necessary, he noted the need to give attention to proper waste management and welfare of garbage collectors.

“Pero ‘yung hindi natin nakikita na basura, sige lang tayo nang sige. Sayang po ‘yung ginagawa nating quarantine, sayang ‘yung isolation sa tao kung ang basura natin ay hindi natin aasikasuhin,” he said; adding that garbage not handled properly may turn into an agent of virus transmission.

Antiporda said this in an interview with Dobol B sa News TV on Wednesday. He was in an interview relative to a garbage collector in Cavite who tested positive which led to the halting of collection of garbage in some areas.

“Ang naging katwiran sa atin, meron daw pong nag-positive sa kanilang garbage collector kung kaya medyo na-delay ‘yung pag-pick up noong mga basura,” he said.

Virtual Pinoy has earlier disclosed that several garbage collectors and netizens are calling the attention of the government for support.

Hopefully, attention and aid for our garbage collectors will be provided too.
