If we are to describe the li
fe of Manny Pacquiao to date, we could attach the words successful, boxing icon and wealthy. But that’s not the case some 25 years ago when he started his boxing career at the age of 16.
Looking back, Pacquao debuted as pro boxer on January 22, 1995. Here, he won after a four-round-bout against fellow Filipino Edmund Enting Ignacio. His name has since been known to viewers due to his aggressive, go-for-broke
kamikaze style and to his unique and catchy surname.
Humbled, the Pambansang Kamao recently shared a photograph of him when he was still starting in professional boxing. “25 years ago today, I started my professional boxing career. I never imagined li
fe would bring me to where I am now. I never dreamed of all the accomplishments my future would hold.”
He said boxing changed his li
fe forever – this made him lift his family from po verty, visited places he never dreamed he could go to, and provided him an opportunity to help others.
The boxing icon expressed his gratefulness to the people who continuously stood beside him through thick and thin – coaches, team, family, countrymen, fans. “Manny Pac-Man Pacquiao has made it this far because of you, so I dedicate this day to all of you that have been there for me these past 25 years. Thank you so much and may God bless!”
Who would think that there was once a young man li
ving an impoverished li fe who would become one of history’s greatest boxer? Such an inspiration for us to never give up and continuously push ourselves.
Pacquiao, also a Senator of the Philippines, is the only boxer in the history of boxing to win 12 major titles in eight different weight divisions. He also holds the record of being the only boxer in history to hold any version of major world titles in four different decades. Whoah!
