The President shared in an interview on “Unang Hirit” that he prays every night for the welfare of the entire nation. He said at his age of 74, Duterte has nothing to ask for himself.

“Yes, for my country. Wala na akong hinihingi para sa akin, sa sarili. Bansa lang,” Duterte answered when the hosts asked him if he still prays at night.

“Ako hindi na ako nagdadasal para sa sarili ko. Para sa bayan,” he added. Duterte also continued that if he would become Santa Claus this Christmas season, he would give gifts to the poor and in need.

Despite receiving criticisms for his tirades against the Catholic Church, Duterte had earlier described himself as a “deeply religious person.” He said despite engaging in disagreement with the prelates, Duterte denied being “sacrilegious.”

“You might think that just because I quarrel with the cardinals and the bishops that I’m irreverent. ‘Yung I could be a sacrilegious guy. Hindi kaya. Kilala ako ni Pastor,” Duterte said; referring to Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

Born and raised a Catholic, Duterte said he lives by the words of the Bible and uses it as a guide whenever he is faced with problems. “I am a deeply religious person, sa totoo lang. And my guiding life, alam ni Pastor ‘yan, is the Bible. And if you can memorize by heart and understand Ecclesiastes 3. You can face any problem. You might not be able to solve it but you can understand why,” Duterte said.
