- With the win, the Filipinas take home the bronze medal
- It was the first podium finish in history for the Philippines in the youth continental competition in the Under 18 division
From being the 56th rank team in the world, the Gilas Pilipinas women’s team orchestrated an impressive upset against China, the world’s 9th best team, in the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U18 Asia Cup in Cyberjaya, Malaysia.
The Philippine squad claimed the bronze medal in a shocking ending that saw the China ballers bow down to the Filipinas with a 14-11 victory last August 24 during the bronze medal game.
According to a report, with only 55 seconds remaining in the game, Kristine Cayabyab buried a putback, bringing the Philippines up by 1 point against their foes. Angel Surada, who was fouled with 25.6 seconds to go, made two free throws to seal the game and claim the victory for a podium finish.
China tried unleashing long shots to tie the game but to no avail. Cayabyab and Surada finished with five points each to frustrate the Chinese opponents, who are also the top-seeded team in the tournament.
Camille Clarin and Ella Farjardo, who chipped in a total of four points, completed the squad mentored by Coach Patrick Aquino. The victory was such a big deal for the Philippines because it is the first podium finish of the national team in the history of the youth continental competition in the Under 18 Division, a report emphasized.
The Philippine team defeated New Zealand with an 11-9 win and advanced to the semifinals for the silver medal but lost to Australia.
