Patricia Cheng and her daughter Bianca donned the Philippine colors in the 39th Annual Ice Sports Industry (ISI) World Recreational Team Championship in Missouri and bagged seven golds, two silvers, and a bronze as they competed in separate divisions.

The mother-daughter tandem faced other skaters from different parts of the United States and the world in the skating events held last July 22 to 27 in the City of St. Peters Rec-Plex rinks, a report said.

It was disclosed that the older Cheng only returned to skating two years ago after about three decades of hiatus. When she came back, skating also became a bonding activity with her 14-year-old daughter Bianca.

In an interview, she encouraged fellow mothers to take up the sport with their children. “It is a great bonding tool and is a very good exercise — you use all your limbs, dancing skills, keeping your balance,” Patricia said.

Patricia, a cardiologist, bested her opponents and bagged five golds in Technical Freestyle, Artistic Program, Footworks, Rhythmic Ribbon, and Rhythmic Ball. She also got one silver.

Bianca, a Grade 10 student at the Philippine Science High School, on the other hand, won two golds in Technical Freestyle and Artistic Program. She also brought home a silver and a bronze medal.

Patricia is reportedly mentored by Coach Dave Alarcon while Bianca is coached by Kihyan Chua-Yap. It was also disclosed that the mother-daughter tandem will suit up for the 2020 edition of the ISI World Championships and are looking to compete in Skate Philippines come November.
