- Kelli and Matt Cameron asked their guests to give school supplies instead of the usual wedding gifts
- Kelli, who is a teacher. came up with the idea to help students who are in need
- They were able to collect and donate a total of 70 backpacks and uniforms to kids last June
Instead of asking for gifts that would greatly help in their new life as husband and wife, a couple decided to request their wedding guests to give them school supplies as gifts.
Kelli Cameron, a 1st Grade Teacher at the Roland Park K-8 Magnet School in Tampa, Florida, came up with the idea to request their guests to give them school supplies instead of the usual wedding gifts. The school supplies were intended for a school that needs this kind of help.
“We got engaged last summer, we’ve been planning for a year or so. We kind of decided that we didn’t need anything specific,”Kelli said in a video posted by the Hillsborough County Public Schools last July 26
Kelli’s now husband, Matt Cameron, also agreed with her intention saying, “Instead of crockpots, it was Sharpies and T-shirts and khaki shorts. I’m not surprise that she came up with this and went into it so passionately because that’s what she does everyday.”
According to a report, the couple married last June and by the time the wedding rites and celebration were over, they were able to collect what they had wished for.
“At the end of the wedding two or three large carts were being pushed out of the venue and loaded into a truck and the back of my husband’s truck was completely filled with backpacks,” Kelli said on the same video.
The couple was able to donate a total of 70 backpacks full of school supplies and uniforms for students at BT Washington right after the wedding in time for the start of classes.
“Being a teacher, I put my heart and soul into the kids and you try and give to them and a lot of teachers do that as well. How wonderful it was that we were able to do that, take something that was about us and help others,” an emotional Kelli said.
“The kids who get the backpacks will be excited for that first day of school, and excited that they have that new backpack and new supplies, and are ready to start the school year,” she added.
Now, that’s passion and humility combined for you! Kudos to this couple.
