President Rodrigo Duterte has strong statements against his son Paolo “Pulong” Duterte if he tries to seek the House speakership.
Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, meanwhile, has responded to his father’s statements.
The President said he vehemently rejects the idea of his son possibly becoming the Speaker of the House of Representatives. His reason was that there are already “too many of them.”
Duterte spoke in a speech in Malacañang and said, “Itong si Paolo, sabihin ko sa kanya if you run for speakership, let me know. Kasi kung tatakbo ka magreresign ako kasi marami na tayo. Andiyan yung kapatid mo mayor. So uneasy.”
Paolo’s sister is Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio. Their brother Sebastian “Baste” Duterte is Davao City’s Vice Mayor.
House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez also echoed the President’s concern if the Presidential son gets the speakership position.
Suarez was quoted by Inquirer saying, ““I really doubt if people will accept ang Presidente ay si Pangulong Duterte at ang speaker anak mo. Medyo marami nang magtataas ng kilay na mga tao. Siguro kung hindi Presidente ang Pangulong Digong, he may have a chance getting a crack at the leadership.”
The President said he will remain neutral and will refuse to meddle on the issue of House speakership.
Several names who are interested in the House speakership position have already circulated.
Among those are Marinduque Rep. Lord Velasco, incoming Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, incoming Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. and even former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
Meanwhile, Paolo has responded on the House speakership issue by saying he doesn’t want any of it.
On his Facebook page he wrote, “I did not say I want to be Speaker. May nagkamali na naman bulong sa tenga mo Mr. President.”
