“Hindi po kami kawawa, maganda ang kulay namin.”
Expressing her sentiments on a recent whitening brand advertisement, television host Bianca Gonzalez became an instant voice for all Filipina morena.
Gonzalez, a proud morena, took her thoughts to Twitter as she reacted on an advertisement which has been under fire for allegedly making morena women look pitiful.
It stirred up people on social media and among them is Gonzalez.
“Just a note from a Filipina with brown skin since birth: There is no problem at all sa mga gustong magpaputi,” the outspoken celebrity said on her tweet.
“The problem is when whitening brands make us look ‘kaawa awa’ dahil lang maitim kami. Kasi, hindi po kami kawawa, maganda ang kulay namin,” she pointed out.
She went on to say that she grew up loving her brown skin because of women who proudly flaunted their skin.
“I looked up to them (Angel Aquino and Tweetie de Leon). I did not need to compare myself to fair skinned girls. It need not be a “battle” of maitim versus maputi,” she stressed.
Gonzalez, who is now a mother of two girls, furthered that she will also teach her daughters that being a morena is not “shameful.”
“I now have two daughters, and both of them are morena. When they grow up, choice nila kung magpapa-tan or magpapaputi sila. But what I will teach them is that being brown is not something “shameful”, and being brown is not something that makes them less beautiful than others,” she concluded.
Her tweet has since retweeted 11k times and liked by over 45K people.
