Sen. Risa Hontiveros was recognized by a European network of civil society organizations.
SOLIDAR, a Belgium-based network of non-governmental organizations aimed at advancing social justice in Europe and worldwide, in cooperation with European Union (EU) parliamentarians, awarded Hontiveros the “Silver Rose Award.”
According to the organization, the Silver Rose Award is given to individuals or civil society groups “whose extraordinary struggles contribute greatly to social justice and solidarity throughout the world.”
The senator received the award at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium on January 29, 2019.
In her acceptance speech, Hontiveros noted that her award is timely “because – in this period of darkness in my country – Solidar is a fellow traveler to pro-democracy social forces and the human rights community in the Philippines and a formidable ally of my party, Akbayan.”
She also noted how Solidar’s Secretary General Conny Reuter participated in a human rights mission in the Philippines back in 2017.
The opposition senator also vowed to continue her efforts in “speaking truth to power.” Hontiveros said, “We continue championing democracy, human rights and the rule of law. We continue to do the work we set out to do — which is to craft policies to make the lives of the underserved better, while continuing the fight against despotism, impunity, misogyny, strongman populism.”
Hontiveros shared the landmark measures she had helped pass in the country. Among those she mentioned are the Mental Health Law (RA 11036), the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act (RA 11148) and the Philippine HIV and AIDS Policy Act of 2018 (RA 11166).
In the end, the senator thanked her party Akbayan and renewed their commitment to “continue speaking truth to power, to find hope amidst despair, and – in the end – to know that victory is within reach.”
