Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao said, as per a GMA News story, that there is a big possibility that his long-awaited rematch with American boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen; though he said there’s nothing concrete yet about it.
He confirmed an initial talk happened when he saw Mayweather in Japan and the public was ecstatic seeing them together.
“Nagkita kami sa Japan sa isang event. Maganda malaking laban ‘yan. ‘Yun lang nagtakbo kami ni Mayweather sa Japan e grabe na ang reaction ng mga fans.
“Sabi niya ‘easy fight, easy fight.’ Sabi ko ‘let’s get it on and get back to the ring, we will fight. I have the belt’.
[We saw each other in a Japanese event. The fight seems promising. For instance, we only ran in Japan and the fans’ reaction was so strong. He said it’s an easy fight, I said ‘let’s get it on and get back to the ring’, we will fight. I have the belt.]
Pacquiao said a negotiation has yet to take a place and he said they will finalize the plan within the week to decide whether his next opponent would be the American boxer or another competitor, and its schedule.
Legendary promoter Bob Arum, however, said he won’t involve himself in the fight.
CBS Sports quoted him saying, “Listen to me. I will not be involved in that fight, period. At all,” Arum said. “Let other people do it. God love them, let them make money. It’s not for me. I want to devote my time and effort to guys who are in the prime of their careers like [Vasiliy] Lomachenko, [Terence] Crawford, Jose Ramirez, Oscar Valdez; I ain’t got time for that shit.”
Pacquiao’s promotional deal with Top Rank expired following his July 15 knockout of Lucas Matthysse.
He said Buboy Fernandez will be his trainer.
The fighting legislator, however, doubted the possibility of a fight in December as the Senate will be busy with the deliberations on the 2019 proposed national budget.
To note, Mayweather stated on Instagram Saturday that he will come back to fight Pacquiao whom he defeated during their May 2015 fight.
