The Victoria crowned pigeon — a beautiful bird with distinctive bright blue feathers and a crown on top of its head — was named after Queen Victoria. And as fabulous as a queen, this beautiful bird with a flashy blue crown of intricate lace-like patterns is the largest living pigeon and can grow as large as a female turkey; reaching up to 30 inches from head to tail.  It gives them more of a peacock look than a pigeon.

Also similar to a clever royalty, the Victoria crowned pigeon is also known for its intelligence.

But despite its docile personality, this is not a low maintenance bird. Since they forage, the enclosure needs to be cleaned regularly so they don’t eat droppings along with food, which can cause health issues.

Still, like all pigeons, the Victoria crowned species feed on the ground. In the wild, its diet consists mainly of fallen fruits, seeds, grains, and small invertebrates. And it is particularly fond of figs. Meanwhile, a captive crowned pigeon does well on a high-quality seed and grain mix, and many keepers stick with a standard dove mix. It must also get regular servings of fresh fruits and vegetables.
