Volleyball here in the Philippines has been consistently growing that our local teams are being invited overseas to promote the sports.
A Filipino volleyball club had recently completed a successful run in Perth, Australia, where they won all their games while promoting the sports there.
It was the fruit of a 10-year-old plan; Marino Salinas, a former Filipino volleyball coach based in Australia, said in an interview.
Salinas shared that since he left the Philippines, he has been curating the dream to invite a Filipino team or club in Australia. He didn’t have to look far as his former player, now Coach Roger Gorayeb, helped him to make the 10-year dream possible.
A 12-man team from the PLDT volleyball club mentored by Gorayeb has won all their four games against Australian volleyball teams in Western Australia during their six-day tour.
“Nabuo ang konsepto para na rin i-promote ang volleyball sa Western Australia,” Gorayeb said.
Salinas, on his part, said the event was a testament of how volleyball can be compared to basketball now; adding that “it is as intense as a basketball game.”
“The people are really thankful that they saw our kababayan. They enjoyed the games. Mas exciting nga raw sa basketball,” Salinas added.
According to a report, the Filipina volleybelles, composed of professional and national players, outplayed Western Australia’s (WA) top women’s volleyball teams.
These teams are Reds Volleyball Club in Belmont, Northern Stars Volleyball Club in Warwick, Rossmoyne Volleyball Club in Mandurah, and WA’s top team WA Steel Women.
Way to go!
