Fans are asking a refund from cinemas screening ‘Avengers: Endgame’ with Chinese subtitles.
Several fans have expressed their frustration over a cinema’s announcement that several screenings of the movie ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will have Chinese subtitles.
Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’s announcement that the much-anticipated Marvel movie will be screened with Chinese subtitles didn’t sit too well with netizens and moviegoers.
Several fans who booked tickets in advance were frustrated because they were not informed it will be shown with subtitles; much more in Chinese language.
Amidst the concern on the influx of Chinese citizens in the country, many felt that the Chinese were being given “special treatment” and were being prioritized more than Filipinos.
Netizen L. Tan commented, “As if Chinese-speaking ang majority of the populace in the Philippines…este, Southwoods?! Special treatment, ha?”
Netizen C. Repisura also vented her anger over the issue; commenting, “Why do you have to sell tickets without informing first the consumers that there will be Chinese subtitles in the movie? With this, I have all the rights to refund my tickets! #notochinesesubtitles”
Some netizens suggested to use Filipino subtitles or even local dialects, instead of Chinese language.
Netizen M. Nacid wrote, “Nasa Pilipinas ka tapos Chinese subtitle?”
A. Acayan also asked, “So you prioritized Chinese subtitles over Tagalog? Huh.”
Meanwhile, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls is adamant with their stand and said they “embrace and promote cultural diversity and has always welcomed all kinds of people from all walks of life regardless of gender, ethnicity and country of origin.”
They continued that movies with subtitles isn’t something new “as it allows better appreciation to non-English moviegoers.”
The company said they are willing to refund booked tickets. Special screening of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ with Chinese subtitles will be showing in select cinemas from April 24-28.
