Palarong Pambansa’s official energy drink this year is not from a famous brand but a locally-popular fresh drink — Buko juice.
This year’s edition of the national sports event will adopt Buko juice as the official thirst-quencher in a effort to help Filipino coconut farmers overcome odds due to decline in copra prices.
Local farmers have recently concluded talks with Palarong Pambansa organizing committee about making Buko juice the official energy drink of the upcoming national event which will be hosted by Davao City, Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol announced on Facebook.
With this a “Buko Vida Kiosk” will be launched on April 29 at the University of the Philippines Mindanao Campus in Mintal District, Davao City.
A loan fund will also be extended by the agriculture department to be used in buying fresh young coconuts from farmers.
This development is seen to help local farmers who have been struggling over the decline on the prices of copra in the Philippines which has gone between P13 and P15 per kilo and an oversupply issue.
Promoting the consumption of buko locally is expected to ease oversupply, hence making it as the official drink of the 2019 Palarong Pambansa is one of them. After all drinking buko juice will not only benefit coconut farmers but also the consumers, Pinol said.
The Department of Agriculture and the Philippine Coconut Authority are now serving coconut water in their meetings and gatherings in an attempt to help resolve the problems of local farmers.
