A 7-year-old boy claimed the top spot in this year’s YouTube’s highest paid stars. What’s more impressive is that he does it by simply playing his toys.
Ryan of Ryan ToysReview is part of of the “unboxing” phenomena on social media. Just like any other kid, Ryan gets excited over toys and his parents decided to share these moments online. On his YouTube channel, Ryan’s 17.3 million subscribers watch him unbox new toys and just have a good time playing.
His channel is so popular to kids and even adults that it has a total of nearly 26 billion views since its launch in 2015. Ryan (and his parents) earned a whopping $22 million or around Php1.16 billion within 12 months, as estimated by Forbes Magazine.
But the money doesn’t stop there because that’s just earnings from YouTube views. Ryan even has his own toy line. He launched last August “Ryan’s World”; a toy and apparel collection.
Ryan was quoted by NBC News talking about his popularity, “I’m entertaining and I’m funny.
Chas Lacaillade, the founder and CEO of Bottle Rocket Management, which represents many “unboxers” on YouTube explained why children and even adults couldn’t get enough of watching others open things. She told Forbes, “Unboxing videos provide the proxy for actually experiencing the joy of receiving and opening something you really desire; this is especially true for items that are out of reach or unattainable.”
Since Ryan is still a minor, 15% of his earnings are saved into what’s called a Coogan account, which is protected until he becomes a legal adult. The rest, maybe, goes to managerial and production fees for his videos.
Lacaillade said that with Ryan’s earnings, “he’s got enough money for 100 lifetimes.”
