- President Rodrigo Duterte praised Senatorial aspirant Harry Roque
- He said he is a “fighter for human rights”
- Roque said he served the people by serving the President
President Rodrigo Duterte praised his former spokesperson Harry Roque in his speech during the celebration of MassKara Festival in Bacolod on Saturday.
Duterte said Roque is a “fighter for human rights”. He expressed understanding for the latter’s indecisive stance to run or not.
GMA News quoted the chief executive saying, “He [kept] on changing not really because he is not a decided fellow but apparent though — apparently every day he weighs his chances or the averages of is he winning or losing.”
He added, “But I think na kung may isa kang senador na ganito, he is a fighter for human rights.”
[But I think if we have a Senator like him, he is a fighter for human rights.]
Duterte recalled, as per a ABS-CBN News story, that Roque criticized him when the former Spokesperson was still a human rights lawyer.
The leader said the aspiring Senator’s former criticisms against him were nothing personal and it does not mean they are rivals.
Duterte has earlier said Roque would not win the senatorial poll; saying he would offer him another post, but the latter continued to run.
Roque, during the filing of his candidacy, said he still hopes for Duterte’s endorsement.
“Sana po. I would wish that the President will endorse me. Until now, he is the best President under existing conditions.”
Roque said he hasn’t given up his principles but he only served the president because he was given a mandate by the people — and he served the people by serving the president.
