- Alan Peter Cayetano to run for a seat in the House of Representatives next year
- He aims to become the next House Speaker
- An opposition lawmaker said he can easily achieve becoming a House Speaker
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano will be leaving his high-level position in President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet with the aim of becoming the next speaker of the House of Representatives.
According to GMA News, Cayetano said in an interview with reporters his intent to vie for the seat to represent the lone district of Pateros and Taguig; admitting it was not a simple task.
The Secretary said he has to win his district first then he will seek the leadership position in the House.
“Then you have to win the trust and confidence of the whole Congress, especially na may specific vision tayo.”
Cayetano said he had a heart-to-heart talk with the President and both of them agreed that him having a role and leadership position in Congress would be good in terms of pursuing the chief executive’s mission for the Filipino people for a safe and comfortable life.
Opposition lawmaker Egar Erice, Politiko shared, thinks the Foreign Secretary can easily achieve his goal unless the opposition gets the majority in the 2019 poll — which he admitted is “quite difficult” at the moment.
Professor Dennis Coronacion of the University of Sto. Tomas’ Department of Political Science said Cayetano can easily win a Senate seat, but he saw the situation favorable to him since there is no clear candidate in the leadership of the lower house following the expected retirement of Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
His sister Representative Pia Cayetano, moreover, will be making a Senate comeback.
