- NBI is investigating the alleged Red October plot
- Guevarra confirmed NBI is now gathering information against the so-called plotters
- Arroyo said the public should believe Duterte’s claim of plot against his government
MANILA, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is reportedly leading the probe into the alleged plot to unseat President Rodrigo Duterte; dubbed as the ‘Red October’.
No less than Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed to the Philstar that NBI was ordered to conduct a fact-finding investigation after military officials revealed early this week that communist leaders have conspired to oust Duterte in the coming weeks.
“The NBI is already gathering information on the alleged Red October plot,” said Guevarra. “If the NBI will be able to verify this alleged plot and identify the persons behind it, the bureau could then build up cases against them.”
Sereno, Tindig Pilipinas involved?
Last Sunday, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Assistant Deputy Chief for Operations Brig. Gen. Antonio Parlade claimed Satur Ocampo and a certain Rey Casambre are allegedly hatching the ouster plot against Duterte.
The group allegedly also include supporters of ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and members of Tindig Pilipinas to which the Liberal Party (LP) belongs.
But this week, Malacañang Palace cleared Vice President and LP stalwart Leni Robredo of involvement in the ‘Red October’. Robredo has repeatedly denied she has anything to do with the plan to remove the President.
Sereno, for her part, also denied any involvement. She said the group of her supporters, Coalition for Justice (CFJ), has no intention whatsoever to launch an uprising against the government
“Ang amin pong hinihikayat ay isang transpormasyon ng puso, rebolusyon po sa puso, at hindi po sa pamamagitan ng armas,” said Sereno.
[What we are encouraging is a transformation of the heart, revolution in the heart and not through an armed struggle.]
Public should believe Duterte
Meanwhile, former president and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, said the public should believe Duterte on his claim about ‘Red October’ because he’s “working from good information.”
“Again, going from my experience as president, the President really has access to information that not all of us have access to,” Arroyo explained.
