- A lawmaker cracked a joke about Secretary Bong Go at a PRC oath taking
- The incident was captured on video and has gone viral on social media
- He has since apologized to the public
MANILA, Philippines – A Lower House lawmaker has apologized after cracking a joke about Special Assistant to the President Christopher ‘Bong’ Go during an oathtaking ceremony conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) recently.
The incident was captured by a netizen on video and uploaded on social media; sparking varied reactions, mostly negative, from commenters.
In the short clip, a man who is understood to be the guest speaker at the event, can be heard asking the audience if they know Bong Go’ to which many replied ‘Hindi’ (No).
The speaker then joked about not pushing through with the oathtaking since no one in the audience seemed to know Bong Go. He went further by saying that those who don’t know Go, a close aide of President Duterte, should not be given the PRC license.
The speaker turned out to be ACTS-OFW Representative John Bertiz II who has since apologized over the incident.
“This is to sincerely apologize on what happened in the recent Mass Oath Taking Ceremony of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers,” said Bertiz during a press conference.
“I didn’t mean to anger, belittle, or offend in any way. It was an inappropriate joke, and I really feel sorry for it,” the partylist solon added.
Bertiz explained it was just the comedian in him which drove him to crack the joke; hoping to draw laughter from the audience.
Nevertheless, the solon said he is taking full responsibility for what happened and is sorry for it.
Go, despite not having publicly admitted, is rumored to be gunning for a Senate seat in the upcoming 2019 election.
