“Bilang guro, sila ang dahilan kung bakit ang sarap pa ring lumaban”: Teacher Impressed with Student Who Stayed in School for Homework:

What makes an educator continue to love the teaching profession? Well, for one teacher it is seeing students who show dedication to learning.

A Facebook post by a teacher of Malusak National High School in Atimonan Quezon narrating a student’s dedication to learning shows great inspiration.

Sir Mark Pee Ortil Ponasdoro shared on Thursday the story of his student who stayed in the classroom beyond school hours just to finish his homework.

Ponasdoro said he went back to school at around 7:30 PM to double check his room in preparation for the upcoming typhoon when he came upon one of his students.

The student was doing the homework which he failed to pass after the deadline at 5:00PM. However, he had already announced an extension to pass the homework until the next day.

“Sabi ko’y tama na ‘yan, okay na. Sabi ko’y nalipasan ka na ng gutom. Sabi n’ya’y kaunti na lang ito ser. Sabi n’ya’y mamaya na kakain. Na para bang kaibigan na ang kalam ng sikmura. Na para bang lagi’t lagi nang sinasanay ng pagtitiis.”

[I said that’s enough. You’ve already passed mealtime. He replied just a few more sir. He said he’ll eat later. As if hunger is a friend. As if he’s accustomed to suffering.]

The student finished the homework at around 7:38 PM.

The educator disclosed the student lives in an abode where there is no electricity; that is why he apparently took advantage of the school’s light.

He said the student might’ve thought, “kahit gabihin, kahit gutumin. Makapag-aral. Matuto lang. Marangal.”

[Even though it would be late coming home, despite getting hungry. Just to study. To learn. Noble.]

As a teacher, he said, the likes of this student are among the reasons why it feels great to still teach.

Behind the impoverished society, the post stated, worsened by the greed for power, stories of diligence and fairness especially from the poor bind the movements.

His FB story ended with them parting ways at around 7:41 PM wherein he disclosed that he felt like crying while his soul was smiling; believing there’s hope.
